Meet Safe One...Emcee
Nathan Sparks, aka Safe One, is an emcee living in Denver, Colorado. He grew up in Phoenix, where he studied music since he was 9 as a classical violinist and jazz drummer. Being a jazz musician is what brought him to hip-hop, following the careers of people like Herbie Hancock from be-bop, to funk, to hip-hop. It was natural.
Nathan is also an avid snowboarder, which is what brought him to Colorado. When he was 22 he moved to Summit County, home to famed ski resorts as Breckenridge, to be a ski bum. That was about the same time he was starting to really develop his skills as a rapper. Finding a nice hip-hop community in the small town of transplants, Depic Records was born.
First it was Recess, which he formed with fellow emcee Luke Drake. Together they released one album, Class Clowns, and had the opportunity to get their feet wet playing around CO with big name groups like Digable Planets, Souls of Mischief, and People Under the Stairs. Very fitting that the groups they grew up on in the 90s were the ones that showed them how it's done on stage. Nathan's been told he is bringing that old school back, but it's an unconscious effort; he's just a hip-hop connoisseur, it's built in.
Last year he released his first solo effort, Just a Feelin, and he's sticking with his roots. It feels simultaneously like new, and something that could have come from '96. It's filled with feel good beats, and honest lyricism.
In winter of 2013 he's releasing an EP surprisingly titled Winter. It's got an indie synth-pop feel, and is designed specifically for the mountain heads of Colorado.
